ECU remap for Gibraltar

An ECU remap for a Gibraltar car is done at SRM Performance, about 2 km over the frontier in La Línea. A remap changes the engine control unit's settings for fuel, ignition, boost and throttle to use some of the headroom the manufacturer leaves in.

What a Gibraltar driver wants from a remap is often different from what a motorway driver wants. Most of your driving is slow, in traffic, up steep streets and out of tight junctions, so stronger torque from low revs and a cleaner throttle response matter more than a big number at the top end. That's the kind of map we talk through with you before writing anything.

The process is the same for every car: a health check first, a backup of the original software, the agreed map written, then a test drive with data logging. Pops and bangs maps are done on request, but think hard about them in a place as built up as Gibraltar: neighbours notice, and they can affect an MOT or ITV. Keeping the car legal and insured is the owner's responsibility. If you leave the car with us, we can drop you back at the frontier.

Coming over for a remap

How long a remap takes depends on the car; we tell you when we quote. The workshop is about 2 km from the frontier, around 5 minutes driving and 35 minutes walking. You can drive straight over.

Common remap jobs

  • Stage 1 map

Software only, on a standard car in good health. On turbo engines this usually brings stronger mid-range pull and easier overtaking.

  • Map to match new parts

When a downpipe, intake or intercooler is fitted, the software should be set up for it. We often build the exhaust and write the map together.

  • Gearbox software

Shift points and torque limits on DSG and some automatic gearboxes can be adjusted to suit the new map, where the car allows it.

  • Diesel maps for towing and driveability

For Range Rovers, pickups and vans, a remap focused on low-down torque can make a heavy vehicle feel less strained.

Frequently asked questions

Will a remap damage my engine?

A sensible map on a healthy engine shouldn't, but it asks more of the clutch, turbo and cooling. That's why we check the car first and tell you honestly if something needs fixing.

Can the car go back to standard?

On most cars, yes. We save a copy of the factory software before changing anything.

Does a remap affect my Gibraltar insurance or MOT?

You should tell your insurer. Changes to power, and especially pops and bangs maps, can affect MOT, ITV and noise rules. Keeping the car legal is the owner's responsibility.

How much does a remap cost?

It depends on the car and the engine. Send us the make, model, year and engine on WhatsApp and we quote after seeing the details.

Can I pay in pounds?

Yes. We accept pounds sterling, though euros are preferred.
