SERVICE 01 · ECU REMAPPING

ECU remapping in La Línea

We do ECU remapping in La Línea de la Concepción, a short drive from the Gibraltar border. We check the car over first, then set the software up for the way you want it to drive.

What a remap actually is

The engine control unit (ECU) is the computer that decides how much fuel goes in, when the spark fires, how much boost the turbo makes and how the throttle responds. Manufacturers leave plenty of headroom in those settings, because the same engine is sold in many markets, on different fuel, to drivers who don't always look after it.

A remap changes those maps to use some of that headroom. On a turbocharged engine you usually feel it as stronger pull from low revs and easier overtaking. How much you gain depends on the engine, its condition and what hardware is fitted, so we won't quote figures before we've seen the car.

We also write pops and bangs maps (the crackle on the overrun when you lift off) for owners who want them. They're done on request and are worth thinking about carefully, because they make the car louder and can cause trouble at the ITV or MOT.

Why people remap

Not everyone is after the same thing. These are the reasons we hear most often:

  • More response and torque from a standard car without changing any parts.
  • Matching the software to a new exhaust, intake or intercooler.
  • Smoother, more progressive power delivery, especially on turbo engines.
  • Tweaking the automatic gearbox (DSG or similar) to suit the new map, where the car allows it.
  • A pops and bangs map, for owners who want the sound and accept what comes with it.

How we do it

  1. STEP 01

    Health check first

Before touching the software we look at the car: stored fault codes, plugs and coil packs, boost leaks, the clutch. Remapping an engine with problems only makes them bigger.

  2. STEP 02

    Agree the spec

You tell us how you use the car and what you want from it. We explain what's realistic for your engine and give you a quote before any work starts.

  3. STEP 03

    Back up the original

We read the factory software and keep a copy, so there's a record of how the car arrived.

  4. STEP 04

    Write the new map

The agreed map is written to the ECU with our diagnostic and programming equipment.

  5. STEP 05

    Test and check

We drive the car, log engine data while it's working and make sure no faults come up. If something isn't right, it's sorted before you collect it.

Cars we see a lot of

Most of our work is on VAG group cars, Mercedes and AMG, BMW, Porsche and Jaguar. Turbocharged petrol and diesel engines are the ones that change most with a remap.

Frequently asked questions

Will a remap damage my engine?

A sensible map on a healthy engine shouldn't, but it does ask more of parts like the clutch, turbo and cooling. That's why we check the car first and tell you honestly if anything should be fixed beforehand.

Can I go back to the standard software?

On most cars, yes, because we keep a copy of the factory software before changing anything. Ask us about your particular model.

Does it affect the ITV, MOT or my insurance?

Changing engine power or adding a pops and bangs map can affect the ITV in Spain (or the MOT in Gibraltar) and noise and emissions rules. Keeping the car road legal is the owner's responsibility, and you should tell your insurer about the modification. We can help with the ITV and homologation process.

What are pops and bangs, and are they legal?

It's a setting that makes the exhaust crackle and pop when you lift off the throttle. We do it on request, but it makes the car louder and can mean failing an inspection or being stopped at a roadside check. Think it over before you ask for it.

I live in Gibraltar. Can you remap my car?

Yes. We're in La Línea, very close to the border. Message us on WhatsApp on +34 642 63 66 39 with the car's details and we'll arrange a time.
