An ECU remap is the job Fuengirola drivers ask us for most, and it makes sense: it can usually be done in one visit and it changes how the car responds every time you drive it. We're in La Línea de la Concepción, about 105 km away.
Before any map goes on, we check the car over: stored fault codes, plugs and coil packs, boost leaks and the clutch. An engine with a hidden problem doesn't get better with more power, it gets worse. Then we save a copy of the original software and write the agreed map. Finally, we road-test the car and log data while it's working.
The engines we see most are VAG's 2.0 TSI in the Golf GTI and R, Cupras and the Audi S3, BMW's B58, the four-cylinder AMGs, and two-litre diesels from almost every maker. On cars with a DSG or automatic gearbox, it's often worth tuning the gearbox too so it keeps up with the new map.
If most of your driving is around Fuengirola, the thing you'll notice is low-down response: pulling out of a roundabout or joining the A-7 without having to drop a gear. If you want a pops and bangs map, we'll write one on request, but bear in mind that between apartment blocks and the seafront the noise gets noticed, and it can cause problems at the ITV.
