Clutch replacement in La Línea
SRM Performance carries out clutch replacements in La Línea de la Concepción, on manual gearboxes with or without a dual-mass flywheel, and we diagnose faults on dual-clutch gearboxes such as the DSG fitted to Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Cupra models.
What a clutch is and what gets replaced
The clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox so you can pull away and change gear. On a manual car it's made up of the friction plate, the pressure plate and the release bearing (or a concentric slave cylinder on many modern cars). The friction plate is a wear item, like brake pads: how long it lasts comes down mostly to how and where the car is driven.
Many cars, particularly diesels and torquey petrol engines, also have a dual-mass flywheel: a flywheel in two halves with springs between them to soak up vibration. It wears over time, and once it has play or starts knocking it's worth replacing alongside the clutch, because getting to it means taking apart exactly the same things. There are kits that swap the dual-mass for a solid flywheel; it's an option with pros and cons, and we'll talk you through them if you're interested.
VAG's DSG dual-clutch gearboxes work differently: two clutches, one for odd gears and one for even, controlled by a mechatronic unit. Typical faults are juddering when pulling away, clunky shifts, or the gearbox dropping into limp mode. Sometimes it's the clutch pack, sometimes the mechatronic unit, and sometimes an oil change or a basic setting adaptation sorts it. Diagnosing it properly before replacing parts is what saves you money.
Signs your clutch is worn
If you notice any of these, it's worth getting it checked soon:
- The revs rise but the car doesn't pick up speed, especially in higher gears or uphill.
- The pedal feels heavier or softer than it was, or the biting point has moved right up.
- Gears are hard to select or crunch going in.
- Judder or shudder when pulling away in first or letting the clutch out.
- A metallic rattle at idle that goes away when you press the pedal, a classic sign of a worn dual-mass flywheel.
- A burning smell after a hill start or parking manoeuvres.
- On a DSG: jerky pull-away, clunky changes, or a gearbox warning on the dash.
How we do it
STEP 01
Road test and diagnosis
We drive the car, check the pedal and hydraulics and, on a DSG, read the gearbox control unit. That tells us whether it's the clutch, the flywheel, the hydraulics or something else.
STEP 02
Quote
We tell you what needs replacing and why, with prices for the clutch kit, the flywheel if needed, and labour. Nothing comes apart without your go-ahead.
STEP 03
Gearbox out
We drop the gearbox and inspect the flywheel, the crankshaft oil seal and everything else that's now in view.
STEP 04
Fitting
The new kit goes in, aligned and torqued to the manufacturer's figures, along with the flywheel if agreed. We bleed the hydraulics and carry out any adaptations the car needs.
STEP 05
Road test and handover
We road test the car to check the biting point and that every gear goes in cleanly. If you'd like to see the old parts, just ask.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a clutch last?
There's no fixed figure. It depends on the car, how it's used and how it's driven: lots of town driving, hills, towing or hard launches wear it faster. Some clutches go on for a very long time; others need replacing surprisingly early.
Do I need to replace the dual-mass flywheel at the same time?
Not always. We inspect it with the gearbox out and tell you what condition it's in. If it already has play or noise, it makes sense to do it then, otherwise you pay the same labour twice.
My DSG is juddering. Is it the clutch?
It might be, but not necessarily. The mechatronic unit, the gearbox oil or an outstanding adaptation can all cause similar symptoms. That's why we start by reading the gearbox control unit and driving the car before recommending anything.
Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?
For a few days, gently, yes, but it will slip more and more and can leave you stranded. The heat from slipping also takes its toll on the flywheel. Bring it in sooner rather than later.
