SERVICE 06 · TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT

Timing belt replacement in La Línea

SRM Performance replaces timing belts in La Línea de la Concepción: belt, tensioners, idlers and, where the belt drives it, the water pump too. It's one service item you really don't want to leave too long.

What the timing belt does and why it's replaced

The timing drive keeps the crankshaft and camshafts in step, so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment. On many engines that's done by a toothed rubber belt; on others, by a metal chain.

A belt wears with mileage and with age, even if the car doesn't do many miles. Every manufacturer sets a replacement interval in both kilometres and years, and it varies a great deal between engines, so the first job is finding the one for yours. What happens if it snaps depends on the engine too: on interference engines, which covers most modern ones, the valves and pistons collide, and you can be looking at a new cylinder head or even a replacement engine.

That's why the belt is never changed on its own. The kit includes the tensioners and idler pulleys, which wear at the same rate, and on many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt as well. If the pump starts leaking a few months later, the whole lot has to come apart again, so it normally gets replaced at the same time.

Chain-driven engines don't have a fixed replacement interval, but chains can stretch and the tensioners and guides wear. If your car has a chain and rattles on start-up, we'll take a look at that too.

When it needs doing

It's time to replace the timing kit if any of these apply:

  • You've reached the manufacturer's interval in kilometres or years, whichever comes first.
  • You've bought a used car and there's no invoice showing when it was last done.
  • The belt is cracked, missing teeth, or contaminated with oil or coolant.
  • There's bearing noise or a whine from the timing end of the engine.
  • The water pump is leaking or the engine temperature won't stay steady.
  • Other work means that area is coming apart anyway, such as an engine replacement.

How we do it

  1. STEP 01

    Check the interval

From the make, model and engine code we look up the interval and parts for your engine, and whether the water pump runs off the belt.

  2. STEP 02

    Quote

You get a price for the kit, the pump if needed, coolant and labour. We don't start until you've agreed it.

  3. STEP 03

Lock the engine and strip down

The engine is locked at its timing position following the manufacturer's procedure before the old belt comes off, so everything goes back exactly where it should.

  4. STEP 04

    Fit the new kit

Belt, tensioners, idlers and pump go on with the specified torque and tension. We turn the engine over by hand to confirm the timing is spot on.

  5. STEP 05

    Refill, test and hand back

We refill and bleed the cooling system, start the engine, check for leaks and temperature, and road test the car. We'll note the mileage so you know when the next one is due.

Frequently asked questions

How often does a timing belt need replacing?

It depends on the engine. Each manufacturer sets an interval in kilometres and another in years, and you go by whichever comes first. Tell us what you drive and we'll tell you yours.

Do I need a new water pump as well?

If the pump is driven by the timing belt, it's the sensible thing to do: the labour is already done, and a pump that fails later means stripping it all down again. If it's driven separately, there's no need.

My car has a timing chain. Does that need replacing?

Chains don't usually have a set interval, but they can stretch. A rattle on a cold start or certain fault codes are signs it needs checking.

What happens if the belt snaps?

The engine stops instantly. On an interference engine the valves and pistons can collide, and the repair bill goes up sharply. Don't try to restart it: call us and we'll assess it.

I've bought a used car and don't know if it's been done. What should I do?

If there's no invoice or clear record, the safe option is to assume it hasn't and get it done. A timing kit costs far less than the damage a snapped belt can do.
