SERVICE 05 · ENGINE REPLACEMENT AND SWAPS
Engine replacement and swaps in La Línea
SRM Performance carries out engine replacements and engine swaps in La Línea de la Concepción, whether that's replacing a failed engine like for like or fitting something different. First, we'll help you work out whether it's worth doing.
What an engine replacement involves
An engine replacement means taking the engine out and fitting another one: new, a good used unit, or a rebuilt engine. It's the usual answer when an engine has suffered serious damage (a failed bearing or con rod, a snapped timing belt, a bad overheat) and repairing it internally would cost more, or be less dependable, than swapping it.
An engine swap is a different job: fitting an engine the car didn't come with, usually from the same manufacturer or group, for more power or simply because you want it. That means adapting mounts, wiring, the ECU, cooling, exhaust and sometimes the gearbox. It's the kind of work you'll see on our social channels, and it's work we enjoy.
Either way, it's more than bolting an engine in. Anything reusable has to be transferred across, anything worth replacing while it's all apart gets looked at (belts, water pump, gaskets, clutch, engine mounts), and the car has to leave running cleanly with no warning lights. In Spain, fitting an engine that differs from the car's type approval is a modification that has to be legalised before it will pass the ITV, and we can help you with the homologation.
When it makes sense
These are the most common situations where an engine replacement comes up:
- The engine has seized or has serious internal damage after a timing belt or con rod failure.
- It has badly overheated and the cylinder head or block is damaged.
- It's burning a lot of oil, has low compression or is smoking, and an internal rebuild doesn't add up.
- The rest of the car is sound and a replacement engine costs less than replacing the car.
- You want more power, and swapping in an engine from the same family is a clean way to get it.
How we do it
STEP 01
Assessment
We confirm the problem really is the engine and not something cheaper to fix, then tell you honestly whether it's worth repairing, replacing, or neither.
STEP 02
Choosing the engine
We go through the options with you: new, used or rebuilt, with the right engine code, mileage and history. For a swap, we agree what needs adapting.
STEP 03
Quote before we start
You get a quote covering the engine, labour and anything we'd recommend replacing at the same time. Nothing comes apart without your go-ahead.
STEP 04
Removal and fitting
We take the old engine out, transfer the ancillaries that are being reused, replace what was agreed, and fit the new engine with fresh fluids and the right settings.
STEP 05
Start-up and road test
We check for leaks, temperatures and fault codes, then road test the car before handing it back. If you want to see the old engine, it's there to look at.
Cars we typically see
We replace engines on all makes; swaps tend to be VAG group, BMW and Mercedes. A few examples:
Typical models
- Volkswagen Golf GTI
- Seat Leon Cupra
- Audi A3
- Audi S3
- BMW 3 Series
- Mercedes C-Class

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to repair my engine or replace it?
It depends on the fault, the car and what a replacement engine costs for that model. Something contained, like a head gasket, is often worth repairing. Extensive internal damage usually makes replacement the better deal. We'll give you both figures so you can decide.
Can I supply my own engine?
Yes, we can fit an engine you've supplied. Send us the engine code first so we can check it's compatible.
Will an engine swap pass the ITV?
An engine that differs from the car's type approval counts as a modification, and it needs an engineer's report and the matching inspection to be legal. Without that, the car won't pass the ITV. We'll explain what's involved before any work starts.
What else should be replaced at the same time?
Whatever makes sense for the mileage and condition: timing kit, water pump, gaskets, engine mounts and sometimes the clutch. We'll list it in the quote and you decide.
