A Mk7 GTI or Golf R with the EA888 2.0 TSI makes a very good base for a remap, and if you want more, a custom exhaust and better intake follow naturally. Before adding power we look at what usually lets these engines down: the water pump and thermostat housing, plugs and coil packs, and the clutch on manual cars.
The DSG gets a paragraph of its own. The seven-speed dry-clutch DQ200, found in plenty of Polos, Golfs and T-Rocs with smaller engines, can judder when pulling away and manoeuvring, which you notice in slow summer traffic along the seafront. The wet-clutch DSGs in the GTI and R need their oil changing on time, and 4Motion cars have a Haldex coupling that wants servicing too, though it's often forgotten.

On the DQ200 it's usually the clutch pack or the mechatronic unit. It needs diagnosing before parts get changed; the answer isn't always the expensive one.
How often should the DSG oil be changed on a GTI or R?
VW sets a mileage interval for the wet-clutch gearboxes. If the car is remapped or driven hard, it's worth not stretching it.
