Volkswagen mechanic in La Línea

SRM Performance is an independent Volkswagen mechanic in La Línea de la Concepción, right by the Gibraltar border. One day it's a timing belt on a Golf TDI, the next it's a Golf R being set up for track days.

The Golf is probably the car we see more than any other, in every flavour. Hardly surprising, given how many there are around here, from the everyday TDI to the GTI and R, which make a cracking base for tuning.

On the diesels, most of our work is proper maintenance: the cambelt and water pump on time, clutches and dual-mass flywheels. On the turbo petrols, it's health checks before a remap, custom stainless exhausts and, when it comes to it, full engine swaps.

We're not a VW dealer. We're a mechanical and tuning workshop that knows the VAG group well, and we'll tell you what's wrong and what your options are before we touch anything.

Common Volkswagen jobs and faults

  • TDI timing belt

The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines (Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Touran, Transporter) are belt-driven. The sensible approach is to replace the belt with the tensioner, idlers and water pump at the manufacturer's interval, or sooner if the car has spent a lot of time in heat and traffic.

  • Clutch and dual-mass flywheel

On manual TDIs and remapped GTIs the dual-mass flywheel eventually gives up. Judder when pulling away or a knocking at idle are the usual signs.

  • 1.2 and 1.4 TSI timing chain

Early 1.2 TSI engines and the twin-charged 1.4 TSI (Golf GT, Polo GTI, Scirocco) are known for timing chain stretch. Listen for a rattle lasting a few seconds on a cold start. We replace timing chains in the workshop.

  • DSG gearbox

The seven-speed dry-clutch DSG can develop judder and mechatronic faults with age; the six-speed wet-clutch box needs regular oil changes. We repair DSG mechatronic units and do the oil changes.

  • Golf GTI and Golf R tuning

Custom cat-back exhausts and downpipes, exhaust valves, remaps and Haldex servicing on the R, all to the owner's spec. This can affect the ITV or MOT, and keeping the car road-legal is the owner's responsibility.

  • Coolant leaks on the 2.0 TSI

The plastic water pump and thermostat housing on the third-generation EA888 is a known weak point. Keep an eye on the expansion tank level.

Frequently asked questions

How often does a TDI cambelt need doing?

It depends on the engine and year; the interval is in the manufacturer's service schedule. Send us the model, year and mileage on WhatsApp and we'll tell you whether it's due.

What would you do to make a Golf GTI quicker?

We'd check it over first: plugs, coils, boost leaks and the clutch. Then we'd talk about what you're after, which might be a remap, a custom exhaust or both. We won't quote power figures before we've seen the car.

Do you work on Transporter vans?

Yes, we do servicing, clutches and timing belts on Transporters. Drop us a message with the engine and what you need.

Are you a VW main dealer?

No. We're an independent workshop in La Línea, about 2 km from the Gibraltar frontier, and we work on a lot of VAG cars.
