The 2.0 TSI EA888 in the GTI and R takes a remap, a downpipe and a custom exhaust very well, but it has its known faults. The plastic thermostat and water pump housing tends to start weeping coolant sooner or later, and early engines in the family had timing chain tensioner trouble. We check for both before asking for more power.
In Málaga traffic, DSG gearboxes are the other regular. The seven-speed dry-clutch DQ200 fitted to many smaller-engined Golfs, Polos and T-Rocs is known for juddering at low speed. And we haven't forgotten the vans: Transporter T5s and T6s, so often converted into campers, come in for timing belts, clutches, lowering and air suspension.

Driving route to the workshop
Getting here from Málaga
It's about 130 km, roughly an hour and 40 minutes by car. Head west on the AP-7 or A-7 past Marbella, Estepona and Sotogrande, then turn off at San Roque for La Línea. In a freshly mapped Golf R, the motorway home makes a decent first test. If you'd rather not drive it down, collection and delivery is possible, priced on request depending on where you are.

It depends on the generation, the engine's condition and what's already fitted. We don't quote figures before seeing the car, but we'll tell you what's realistic for yours.
My Golf is losing coolant and I can't see where from. What could it be?
On the EA888 it's very often the thermostat housing or water pump, tucked away at the back of the engine where they're hard to spot. We'll check with the car in front of us.
Do you work on camper vans?
Yes, T5 and T6 Transporters come in often. If yours has a camper conversion, tell us what's fitted before you come.
Does a remap affect the ITV or MOT?
Changing engine power can affect the ITV, the MOT and emissions rules, and you should tell your insurer. Keeping the car road legal is the owner's responsibility. We can help with the ITV and homologation side.
