Mini mechanic in La Línea
SRM Performance is a Mini mechanic in La Línea de la Concepción, working on the Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works across every generation. We're about 2 km from the Gibraltar border.
Minis are easy to love: small, nimble and properly lively in S and JCW form. But each generation has its quirks, and some get expensive if you ignore them. The one most worth knowing about is the 1.6 engine in the 2007 to 2013 Cooper and Cooper S.
Modern Minis have a lot of BMW in them, which helps: we work on BMWs often and know their electronics and engines well. We do servicing, clutches, timing work and engine swaps, plus custom exhausts and remaps for owners who want a bit more.
We're not a Mini dealer. We're an independent garage that works on all makes, and we'll tell you straight what's going on with the car.
Known Mini faults and jobs
R56 timing chain
The 1.6 in the R55, R56 and R57 Cooper and Cooper S (N14 and N18 engines) is known for timing chain and tensioner trouble. A metallic rattle on a cold start is the sign, and it's not one to leave. We replace timing chains in the workshop.
Carbon build-up and oil use
Being direct-injection, the same engine builds up carbon on the intake valves and often uses oil. Check the level between services and don't stretch oil change intervals.
Water pump and thermostat housing
Coolant leaks from the water pump and thermostat housing are common on the R56. In summer heat, a Mini that's losing coolant will end up overheating.
Clutch and flywheel
On the Cooper S and JCW, particularly if remapped or driven enthusiastically, the clutch and flywheel tend to wear sooner than you'd expect.
R53 Cooper S supercharger
The first-generation Cooper S (2002 to 2006) is supercharged. With age the blower gets noisy and its oil needs attention. It's a much-loved base for tuning.
Exhausts and maps for the Cooper S and JCW
We build custom exhausts and valved systems and remap to the owner's spec. These can affect the ITV or MOT, and keeping the car road-legal is the owner's responsibility.

Frequently asked questions
My Mini rattles on start-up. Is it the timing chain?
On an R56 it's quite likely. Record the noise from cold and send it to us on WhatsApp at +34 642 63 66 39 with the year and model. Better to check it before it gets worse.
How much oil should a Cooper S use?
Some oil use is normal on these engines, but if you're topping up often it's worth finding out why. We'll check it over and tell you what we find.
Is a JCW worth remapping?
They respond well, but we check the engine, clutch and cooling first. If anything needs fixing beforehand, we'll say so.
Are you a Mini dealer?
No. We're an independent workshop in La Línea, close to the Gibraltar border, and we work on all makes.
