People tend to buy a Volvo and keep it. Around here you'll see XC60s and XC90s doing family duty, V60s and V90s piling on the miles, and still plenty of V70s and XC70s with the classic five-cylinder engine. They're long-lived cars, provided the servicing is kept up.
The five-cylinder engines, both the T5 petrol and the D5 diesel, use a cambelt, and it's not a job to put off. These engines are also known for their crankcase breather system, which clogs over time, builds pressure and pushes oil out past the seals. The newer four-cylinder Drive-E engines have different watch points, such as the oil consumption seen on some early petrol versions.
Most automatic Volvos use Aisin gearboxes, which benefit from a fluid change that often has never been done. And if yours is a T5 or a V60 Polestar and you want a bit more, we also build custom exhausts and remap to suit the engine, with staying ITV and MOT-legal down to the owner.
Common Volvo jobs
Five-cylinder cambelt
On the T5, D5 and other five-cylinder engines we replace the belt with tensioner, idlers and water pump at the manufacturer's interval.
Crankcase breather
When the breather clogs, crankcase pressure rises and oil finds its way out through the seals. We check it and replace it before bigger leaks start.
Drive-E oil consumption
Some early four-cylinder petrol engines are known for using oil. We measure the consumption and explain the options.
Automatic gearbox fluid
The Aisin gearboxes in many Volvos work better with fresh fluid. If yours thumps into gear or is slow to engage, that's the first thing we look at.
XC60 and XC90 suspension and brakes
Heavy cars that get through brakes, ball joints and bushes. We inspect front and rear and replace what's worn.

How often does a five-cylinder Volvo need a cambelt?
It depends on the engine and year, and Volvo sets both a mileage and an age limit. If there's no history, the safe move is to change it. Send us the model and year and we'll quote.
Do you look after T6 and T8 plug-in hybrids?
