Land Rover and Range Rover mechanic in La Línea
SRM Performance is an independent Land Rover and Range Rover mechanic in La Línea de la Concepción, about 2 km from the Gibraltar border. We work on the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery, Evoque and Defender.
There are a lot of Range Rovers on this coast, and most of them live a decidedly on-road life: town traffic, the motorway, kerbs in car parks. What wears them out here is heat, short trips and an air suspension system that never gets a day off.
They're complex cars with a few well-known weak spots, especially the V6 diesels and the newer four-cylinder Ingenium engines. Catching a chain rattle or a drop in oil pressure early can be the difference between a repair and a replacement engine.
We're not a Land Rover dealer. We're an independent mechanical and tuning workshop that works on all makes, and that includes full engine swaps when there's no sensible alternative.
Known Land Rover and Range Rover faults
Air suspension
Leaking air springs, a sticking valve block or a compressor that can't keep up are the usual reasons a Range Rover sits low in the morning or throws a suspension warning. It affects the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery 3, 4 and 5. We repair factory air suspension.
3.0 V6 diesel (TDV6 and SDV6)
The V6 diesel in the Discovery, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover is known for crankshaft and bearing failures, often linked to oil condition and pressure. Frequent oil changes with the right spec are the best prevention. Once the damage is done, a replacement engine is sometimes the sensible route.
2.0 Ingenium diesel timing chain
The four-cylinder Ingenium in the Evoque, Discovery Sport, Velar and Defender from 2015 on is known for timing chain stretch, with the chain at the back of the engine. We replace timing chains in the workshop.
5.0 supercharged V8
On earlier Range Rover and Range Rover Sport V8s, timing chain tensioners and water pump leaks are well-known issues. A rattle on start-up is the warning.
ZF automatic gearbox
The six- and eight-speed ZF boxes are 'sealed for life' according to the manufacturer, but a fluid change at sensible intervals heads off a lot of harsh shifts and clunks. We'd recommend it on higher-mileage cars.
Custom exhausts
For the Range Rover Sport SVR and V8 models we build custom exhausts and valved systems to the owner's spec. These can affect the ITV or MOT, and keeping the car road-legal is the owner's responsibility.

Frequently asked questions
My Range Rover is sitting low on one corner. What's wrong?
Most often it's a leaking air spring or air line. Tell us which corner drops and whether there's a warning on the dash, and we'll go from there.
Can I service it away from the dealer without losing the warranty?
As general information, EU rules allow it as long as the manufacturer's schedule is followed and parts of matching quality are used. Warranty repairs are still done by the dealer network.
Do you do engine swaps on Land Rovers?
Yes, we carry out complete engine swaps. When a V6 diesel has spun a bearing or broken its crank, it's often the most sensible option. We'll quote before starting.
Are you a Land Rover main dealer?
No. We're an independent workshop in La Línea, about 2 km from the Gibraltar frontier, working on all makes.
