BMW mechanic in La Línea
SRM Performance is an independent BMW mechanic in La Línea de la Concepción, just over the Gibraltar border. Whether it's a high-mileage 320d or a tuned M3, we'll take the time to find the fault and explain it to you.
BMW is one of the makes we see most. They're cars with a great chassis and lovely engines, but every generation has its weak spots, and most of them are well documented: oil leaks from particular gaskets, electric water pumps, timing chains on certain diesels.
We're an independent garage, not a BMW dealer. We do servicing, engine repairs, clutches and full engine swaps, and because we're also a tuning workshop we can fabricate a stainless exhaust or downpipe and set the ECU up the way you want it.
A lot of our BMW owners drive them daily between Gibraltar, the Campo and the Costa del Sol. Short trips, summer heat and crawling through summer traffic are hard on cooling systems and oil, so that's where we look first on a service.
Common BMW faults and jobs
N47 timing chain
The N47 2.0 diesel (118d, 120d, 320d, 520d, roughly 2007 to 2014) has its chain at the back of the engine and is known for stretching it. A whine or rattle from the gearbox end is the warning sign. The engine usually has to come out to replace it. We replace timing chains in the workshop.
N54 and N55: HPFP, injectors and turbos
The turbo straight-sixes in the 135i, 335i, 535i and M135i respond brilliantly to a remap, but the N54 is known for high-pressure fuel pump, injector and wastegate rattle problems. On the N55, rocker cover and oil filter housing leaks are typical.
Oil filter housing gasket
Common across almost every N-series engine. Oil drips onto the auxiliary belt and can eventually shred it. If there's oil on the side of the engine, it's worth getting it checked.
Electric water pump and thermostat
On the N52, N54 and N55 the water pump is electric and tends to fail with little warning: a temperature light and the car drops into limp mode. With summer heat on the coast, it's not one to push your luck with.
Clutch and dual-mass flywheel
On manual diesels and remapped cars, the dual-mass flywheel wears out. If you feel judder pulling away or a knock as the clutch comes up, we'll check it and quote for the replacement.
Exhausts and maps for M and M Performance cars
We build custom exhausts and downpipes for the M140i, M240i, M340i, M3 and M4, and remap to the owner's spec. These changes can affect the ITV or MOT, and keeping the car road-legal is the owner's responsibility.

Frequently asked questions
Can you service a BMW that's still under warranty?
As general information, EU rules let you have your car serviced at an independent garage without losing the manufacturer's warranty, provided the service schedule is followed and parts of matching quality are used. Warranty repairs are still carried out by the dealer network.
Are you a BMW dealer?
No, we're an independent workshop in La Línea. We work on a lot of BMWs and always explain what we're doing and which parts we're using.
How much is an N47 timing chain?
It depends on the model and what we find once it's apart: guides, tensioner, sometimes the oil pump. Send us the model, year and mileage on WhatsApp and we'll quote once we've seen the car or the photos.
Is it worth remapping a 335i or M140i?
Both engines respond well, but we check plugs, coils, boost leaks and the clutch first. Remapping an engine with a fault only makes the fault worse, and we'll tell you honestly if something needs sorting first.
